Anyway, here it is!
Okay, there's a little more than just the basket pictured. Sue me. I forgot to take a solo, and it's dark out. And there might be wolves out there. Or crickets. Or Night Bees. Those exist, right? |
Anyway, I'm not thinking the basket will survive more than one growing season, but you never know. And the dirt will just go into the flower bed when I'm done.
While I was out yesterday--and the observant among you may have noticed this--I bought some soil for the boxes. Although I am happy that the boxes are full, I'm a little skeptical about the soil itself. Last year I bought Miracle Gro garden soil, and it was great. This year, I cheaped out for the lesser known "Sta-Green" brand. I think the soil is probably fine overall, but I found it to be overly generous with the wood pulp (or whatever you might call it). The soil doesn't seem as rich and earthy as Miracle Gro soil. If my growing season sucks this year, I blame the soil! You could call it an exit strategy.
Anyway, here's another picture of things. Seems like a good time to throw one in.
I think Nora colored on the side of the big box. |
So anyway, I had this old red tub in the garage that has just been sitting there. So I gave it a new purpose in life. Dirt holding. Yes, I poked drainage holes in it like a good girl.
Over Christmas, I was in need of an end table and didn't really have enough money to go out and buy one. I have these old crappy chairs that have been following me around for years, so I sawed the back off of one, slapped a tablecloth on it, and voila! End table! But then I had this stupid chair back just sitting there. I figured my garden is already full of--oh heck, it's MADE of--junky rejects from the house. So this should be right at home! And that's why the footlocker has a chair back in it.
This morning, Hubbyman looked out the window and said, "Why is there a chair back in the plant box?" Need I say more? |
I planted lettuce and radish seeds in the shallow box/lid thing. Hubbyman informed me, when I got home today, that my little darling had been digging around in it. So who knows what will happen. She did this to my radishes last time I tried to grow them. Maybe she has something against root vegetables.
Is it safe to hope that I will actually get anything out of this box? |
The onion box was warping pretty badly. Not shocking by any means, but I didn't want the dirt to just wash out the bottom or something, so I put it in the radish box. Man, too many boxes. I'm going to need to come up with names for them!
Anyway, speaking of onions, golly bob howdy, they are growing! What do you know about that! Grocery store onions, people! Take note!
The broccoli and kale keep coming up, but no sign of chard or peas! I'm starting to wonder if they will ever grow. Maybe I need to reseed them. I keep thinking, "No, be patient, they'll grow in their own time," and all that. But then I also keep thinking about how, if I do need to reseed them, well, time's a-wastin'! Ah, the drama of germination.
Anyway, some pictures of what things are growing in the garden: kale, broccoli, oregano, and sage.
The end.
I am awaiting the naming of your boxes, and the stories of plant hierarchy. Who will reign supreme this year? Will it be the broccoli? Or perhaps the onion?
ReplyDeleteI posted a comment on here yesterday about being patient and waiting for the peas as they have their very own timetable...and today you have peas!! :)
